Cupping, also known as myofascial decompression is a simple and effective technique that can be used with acupuncture or alone to help with muscle congestion. Muscle congestion can be caused by repetitive injury and incorrect posture. This results from prolonged sitting in front of a computer or at a desk. It is considered a type of myofascial release as it helps reduce tension in the muscles and surrounding tissues.
Glass or ceramic cups are used to alleviate the tension in the muscles. Please note that if the tension is severe, a discoloration in the skin may occur to the suction of the cups. This is an indicator of the tension and stress in the muscles. The darker the color the tighter the muscle. The discoloration or bruising will usually fade in a few days. With continued treatment, this color will fade and circulation in the muscles will improve. Cupping sessions usually take about 20 minutes.
