Modern Health Care from a Traditional Chinese Holistic Approach

Sports Medicine Class Series for 2019

Introduction:

The term “dry needling” has been a heavily contended topic in our profession lately. The major issue is that chiropractors and physical therapists are performing this on their patients after just taking a weekend course. The other half of the problem is that acupuncturists think that “dry needling” is just acupuncture performed on Ashi points. Both sides are just somewhat correct.

The correct term for this type of needling is Myofascial Trigger Point Release. A Trigger Point is an Ashi Point but not all Ashi Points are trigger points. It requires detailed knowledge of specific muscles and how they move against a joint but also how to correctly needle into the area to elicit the muscle release. It is a valuable technique in the treatment of chronic, stubborn sports injuries.

This class will cover some of the history behind this technique, explain and demonstrate how to perform the trigger point release on specific muscles.

For each area we will discuss:
1. Anatomy of the major trigger points

2. Contraindications for needling

3. Examine the area by palpation, muscle and orthopedic tests

4. Demonstrate how to release the trigger point

The Acupuncture for Sports Medicine Class Series focuses on major principles of using acupuncture in treating sports injuries with a major emphasis treatments including distal points and local trigger and motor points. In the series, we will cover the following topics:

Richard Tan Balance Method, Master Tung Points, Trigger/Motor Points, dry needling, Kinesiology taping (KT Tape), internal and external applications of herbal formulas for injuries and pain, and orthopedic testing for the various joints.
